Most have a first language other than English, with Urdu, Bengali and Tamil the most widely spoken languages. Approximately two thirds of students are boys. The proportion of students who have a range of physical and behavioural learning difficulties and disabilities, including those with statements of special educational needs, is above the national average. Over half the students are eligible for free meals, a proportion that is very high. The school has had sports college status since 1998 and is an established training school. It has won many awards, including Artsmark Gold on three consecutive occasions.
