Ofsted school description

Bexleyheath is much larger than the average secondary school. The area is served by selective grammar schools. Most students come from White British backgrounds, with around a quarter from other minority ethnic backgrounds. Students enter the school with attainment that is below the national average. The proportion of students entitled to free school meals is similar to other schools nationally. The number of students who have learning difficulties and/or disabilities is average. The largest proportions of these students have dyslexia or are in need of behavioural, social and emotional support. The school's sixth form is one of three schools which form the Partnership 6th consortium in the north of the borough. The new headteacher came to the school in February 2009. The school is set to become a National Challenge Trust School in September 2009.
When the school was inspected in October 2007 it required Special Measures because it was failing to give its pupils an acceptable standard of education. Significant improvement was required in relation to; teaching and learning, the curriculum and leadership and management at all levels. Inspectors visited the school in February, May and November 2008 and March 2009 to evaluate the progress made by the school. This inspection took account of evidence from the previous monitoring visits.
