Banbury School is a larger than average, comprehensive school with a sixth form. It has recently been designated as a Specialist Humanities College, with Training School Status, as of September 2007. It is currently pursuing Foundation Status, with a view to becoming a Trust school.

Students come from a wide range of economic backgrounds. Few students leave other than at standard times but significant numbers join from other local schools, in Years 7 to 11. Students' attainment on entry is below average. In the sixth form, students join from other schools and the attainment on entry is average. The biggest proportion of students are White British heritage who represent an above average percentage. Those students who have minority ethnic backgrounds are in the early stages of learning English. The majority of both groups are Pakistani heritage students, with an increasing number of Portuguese and Eastern European students.
