Ofsted school description

This is a larger than average school. Its students are predominantly White British, although there is an increasing minority of black and minority ethnic students, particularly from Eastern Europe. Relatively few students speak English as an additional language, although the number is increasing. The school draws the majority of its students from areas containing significant pockets of deprivation and the proportion of students eligible for free school meals is above the national average. The proportion of students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities is also above the national average. On entry into school, students' attainment is below average.

The school operates a regular breakfast club and numerous after hours learning clubs. The school has gained specialist sports college status and has developed its own extended school's provision centred on a range of sporting activities. In addition, the school has attained the Artsmark award and Investors in People accreditation, as well as the 'Healthy Schools' standard. The school is an accredited training centre for the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) and has gained the Careers Education and Guidance Quality Award. The school works in partnership with a number of other schools in its provision of sixth form courses. It shares its site with the local city learning centre.
